Game Rules and Betting

Baccarat is a simple game to learn. Two hands are dealt: one to the Banker (representing the dealer or the house) and the other to the Player (you do not necessarily have to bet on this hand). You can bet on three possible outcomes:

  1. Player’s hand wins
  2. Banker’s hand wins
  3. Tie

A Player win pays out at one-to-one (1:1, also known as “evens” or “even money”) A Banker win pays out at one-to-one minus a 5% commission (e.g. a $100 bet returns $195 net). A Tie pays out at 8 to 1.

Once your bet is placed, two initial cards are dealt to both the Player and the Banker. Each hand in Baccarat is made up of a maximum of three cards. Cards below ten are worth their face value in points, with the exception of aces, which are worth 1 point. Tens and face cards are worth 0.

The highest possible score in Baccarat is 9 – if your hand adds up to 10 or more, only the second digit of the score is taken into account. For example, a hand of 5+7+2 equals 14, and therefore scores 4 points.

If either the Player or Banker is dealt a score of 8 or 9 on their first two cards (known as a “natural” hand), they win (or tie, if the opposing hand is worth the same number of points) and a new deal begins.

If the first two cards dealt to the Player total between 0 and 5, the Player must draw a third card. If the Player has a score of 6 or 7 then they cannot draw and the Banker will draw on a score of 0 – 5.

The Banker will always draw a third card in the following situations, even if the Banker would win by standing on two cards:
