Wrap-up of ESPN Poker Series 2008 – Episodes 31 & 32 of WSOP Main Event #54, World Championship No-Limit Texas Hold ’em

Originally aired on ESPN, November 11, 2008

The amazing run of three Full Tilt Poker pros in the 2008 WSOP Main Event came to a climax at the Final Table last night. Scott Montgomery, Kelly Kim and Craig Marquis just came up short of full WSOP glory but won praise for their outstanding performances across the 12 days of play.

The previous playing day was July 15, 2008, before a 117 day break that lasted until November 9th. Scott Montgomery started the day in 3rd place, with 19.7 million in chips. Craig Marquis was in 8th place, with 10.2 million in chips, while Kelly Kim came to the table as the short-stack, in 9th place with just over 2.6 million in chips.

Play started slowly on the day as the nine players tested each other out. It took 13 hands before a flop was seen, 20 hands to see a turn card and 22 hands to see a multiple player pot.

As the short stack, Kelly Kim’s day began well when he took the blinds from the button in the first hand; it could have been so much better had he gotten any action from his fellow players, considering he was holding pocket Aces. He had to wait until the 35th hand before another real opportunity to play presented itself, when he was able to double up with pocket kings. He survived another all-in shortly after that in a chopped pot.

Against the odds, Craig Marquis was the first person to be eliminated. Scott Montgomery knocked out Craig by making a Broadway straight on the river, beating Craig’s set of 7s. His disappointment was tempered only by the $900,670 prize for 9th place.

In the very next hand, Kelly Kim was eliminated when he was forced to push all-in again, with most of his chips committed to the big blind. He was unable to win the hand and finished in 8th place, winning $1,288,217.

Scott Montgomery stayed out of trouble for most of the early hands and he managed to knock out a second player later on in the day. Unfortunately, he lost 24 million chips in a game-changing hand when his A9 failed to improve against his opponent’s pocket Kings. He was eliminated soon afterwards when he pushed all-in with A3 against 66. Despite an Ace hitting on both the flop and the turn, a 6 fell on the river to end his run. Scott received $3,096,768 for 5th place.

Congratulations to Scott, Kelly and Craig on their outstanding performances at the 2008 Main Event and for winning $5,285,655 of prize money between them.

Preview of ESPN Poker Series 2008 - Episode 31 WSOP Main Event #54, World Championship No-Limit Texas Hold ’em

To be aired on ESPN at 10:00 PM ET, November 04, 2008

Now that we know the make-up of the November Nine, who will play out the last days of the Main Event starting on November 9th, ESPN will take a closer look at the nine players in its final table preview show on November 4th.

Craig Marquis, Kelly Kim and Scott Montgomery are the three Full Tilt Poker pros who will play for more than $9 million and the most coveted title in poker.

Scott Montgomery

Scott is in the best position of the three, starting out in the 4th seat with 19.7 million chips, good for third place overall. The Canadian is hoping that his run of good form this year continues into November, having cashed in four WSOP events already during 2008 for over $1.3 million. While Scott acknowledges that "everyone has a chance," he is confident and believes that "I'm going to win; I planned on winning from day one." His aggressive play has been a feature of several televised hands, particularly being rescued on the river after pushing all-in with nothing but Ace-high on Day 7.

Craig Marquis

Although only in 8th place in chips, Craig is one a group of four players with mid-size stacks between 10 and 12 million chips. At 23 years of age, Craig has the potential to become the youngest winner in the tournament’s history. While a lot of people might be overwhelmed by the experience and dazzled by the attention and excitement, Craig has clearly maintained a laid back, easy going demeanor, even though he just started playing poker in January 2007. Having played with and learned from a couple of influential poker friends, including Full Tilt Poker pro David Benefield, Craig’s poker career has skyrocketed in 2008. A calculating yet aggressive player, Craig is ready for the final table, as he shows in this interview about his preparations with Chris Ferguson.

Kelly Kim

Kelly is by far the short stack in the event, holding 2.6 million chips. While realistic about his chances, the California native and economics graduate has over 13 years of poker experience to draw on, having played since college. Although Kelly knows he’s a huge underdog, he will be looking to use his experience playing the short stack to turn every possible situation to his advantage. Kelly has already shown he’s a survivor; on Day 5, he survived a dramatic all-in by rivering an Ace to stay in the tournament. Learn more about Kelly’s strategy as the short stack in his interview with Chris Ferguson.

The action will play out later this week, when the final table starts on November 9th. The following day, the last two remaining players will meet to play heads up for the championship. Final Table coverage will air on ESPN at 9:00 PM ET on Tuesday, November 11th.

Aired on ESPN at 9:00 PM & 10.00 PM ET, October 28, 2008

Day 7 of the Main Event will air tonight on ESPN. Of the 6,844 players who started poker’s ultimate quest, only 27 are left. Wrap-up of ESPN Poker Series 2008 – Episodes 27 & 28 (Day 6) of WSOP Main Event #54, World Championship No-Limit Texas Hold ’em

Originally aired on ESPN, October 21st, 2008

Day 6 was the day when the nine players to make it to the final table began to rise up the leaderboard.

Kelly Kim emerged as a player to watch out for in the tournament when he eliminated several players from ESPN’s featured table. He also showed good instinct in laying down pocket queens to avoid quad sevens and losing all his chips. Kelly finished the day in 5th place. Craig Marquis made a dramatic first appearance when he won a huge 12 million chip pot to take the chip lead; Craig ended Day 6 in 2nd place. Scott Montgomery also rose quietly in the standings and finished the day in 16th place.

Another deep Mike Matusow run in the Main Event came to an end when he exited in 30th place. His instant all-in call while holding AJ failed to hold up when his opponent’s A9 hit a 9 on the turn. Full Tilt Pro David Benefield exited in unfortunate circumstances in 73rd when a flush torpedoed his straight on the river.

Only 27 players from the 79 starters made it into Day 7, which will be the final day of play before the Main Event final table on November 9.

Preview of ESPN Poker Series 2008 - Episodes 27 & 28 of WSOP Main Event #54, World Championship No-Limit Texas Hold ’em

Poker on TV

Players’ thoughts are centered on more than just surviving Day 6 of the 2008 WSOP Main Event, which is the focus of Episodes 27 & 28 on ESPN tonight. With only 79 players remaining, everyone left knows they have to make it through just two more days of play to reach the final table to become a member of the November Nine.

Mike Matusow will use his energy to keep Team Full Tilt’s flag flying, while David Benefield will start the day as the highest ranked Full Tilt Poker pro in the field. Day 6 will also be the day for players such as Craig Marquis, Kelly Kim and Scott Montgomery to make their move up the leaderboard and position themselves for a run at the final table.

Check back for a recap of all the action later this week, and stay tuned to this page as we march closer to November 9th, the day the final table will play out.

Wrap-up of ESPN Poker Series 2008 – Episodes 25 & 26 (Day 5) of WSOP Main Event #54, World Championship No-Limit Texas Hold ’em

Originally aired on ESPN, October 14th, 2008

Of the 189 players that started the day, only 79 remained at the end of Day 5 of the Main Event.

Mike Matusow dominated the TV coverage on ESPN’s featured table. Despite having a quiet day, he ignited the crowd twice with two vintage Matusow all-in hands and survived the day in 50th place. David Benefield was well positioned in 15th place, while Kelly Kim (17th) survived a dramatic all-in when he rivered an ace to stay alive. Scott Montgomery (34th) was seen eliminating one of the five remaining female players and Craig Marquis finished the day in 32nd place.

The opportunity for a bracelet evaporated for some on Day 5. Allen Cunningham was unable to add to his bracelet tally, finishing in 117th place. Gus Hansen’s quest for his first bracelet ended in 160th place. Mark Vos was unable to repeat his 2006 success, exiting in 80th place, while Jeff Madsen was eliminated in 112th. Last but not least, Friend of Full Tilt Jeremiah Smith finally bowed out in a very respectable 146th.

Preview of ESPN Poker Series 2008 - Episodes 25 & 26 of WSOP Main Event #54, World Championship No-Limit Texas Hold ’em

To be aired on ESPN at 9:00 PM & 10.00 PM ET, October 14, 2008

Day 5 is the 9th playing day of the 2008 WSOP Main Event and the tension is building as the remaining 189 players fight for a spot at the final table.

These two episodes will go a long way towards answering some key questions: can Team Full Tilt’s Mike Matusow and Allen Cunningham keep their momentum going into Day 6? Will established pros Mark Vos and Jeff Madsen make a run to the final table? Or is it time for lesser known players like David Benefield, Craig Marquis, Scott Montgomery or Kelly Kim to emerge?

Watch ESPN’s high-octane coverage of Day 5 tonight, and check back later for a recap of all the action that took place.

Wrap-up of ESPN Poker Series 2008 – Episodes 23 & 24 (Day 4) of WSOP Main Event #54, World Championship No-Limit Texas Hold ’em

Originally aired on ESPN, October 7th, 2008

It was a tense time on Day 4 of the Main Event, as the number of players was whittled down from 484 to 189.

Mark Vos was featured in an interview and had a great day, progressing from 79th to 19th place. Team Full Tilt’s Gus Hansen may have started in 142nd place, but he moved quickly into contention to 21st place. Jeff Madsen was living dangerously, but survived several all-in hands and finished the day in 84th place. Allen Cunningham made solid progress as he eliminated smaller stacks to move up the leaderboard from 115th to 31st place. Sliding slowly in the opposite direction but staying in contention was Friend of Fill Tilt Poker Jeremiah Smith, as he dropped from 2nd to 49th place. Mike Matusow kept his hopes alive for another bracelet in 124th place.

Two Full Tilt Poker pros suffered very bad beats on the day. Adam Schoenfeld was knocked out of the tournament after going all-in against an opponent who came from way behind to hit a higher straight on the river. Jon Turner’s exit was also cruel, as his set of aces came up short when his opponent made a flush on the river.

Check back on Tuesday for a preview of next week’s action as we march closer to the final table of this year’s Main Event.

It’s down to the last 474 players on Day 4 of the WSOP Main Event. With the money bubble out of the way, the remaining players can now set their sights on making the final table. Some of Team Full Tilt’s pros remain both high on the leaderboard and in the eye of the camera, including Allen Cunningham, Gus Hansen, and Mike Matusow. Full Tilt Poker pros David Benefield, Mark Vos, Jeff Madsen and emerging talent Craig Marquis may also make an appearance.

Wrap-up of ESPN Poker Series 2008 – Episodes 21 & 22 (Day 3) of WSOP Main Event #54, World Championship No-Limit Texas Hold ’em

Originally aired on ESPN, September 30th, 2008

It was a day of high intensity, the money bubble and sick hands for the 1,308 players who started Day 3 of the WSOP Main Event.

Friend of Full Tilt Poker Jeremiah Smith flopped a straight with 9c6c against his opponent’s pocket Queens to become the first player with over one million chips. He ended the day in 2nd place overall. Full Tilt Poker pro Jeff Madsen called two all-ins with 5s6s against AdKh and KcQd and made a straight to take down the pot. Gus Hansen, Mike Matusow, Adam Schoenfeld, Dag Martin Mikkelsen and Mark Vos also made it through to Day 4.

Not so lucky were Jennifer Harman, Eric Seidel and Patrik Antonius, who were seen making their exit before the bubble had burst. Nenad Medic was the unluckiest pro of the day, as he got knocked out on the river by a Queen despite being well ahead in the hand with AhKc vs. AdQc.

The bubble burst as an ominous 666 players made it to the money. Many short stacks headed for the door soon after that, and the day ended with a total of 474 players remaining. Stay tuned for a preview of Day 4 of the Main Event, which will air next Tuesday on ESPN.

To be aired on ESPN at 8:00 PM & 9.00 PM ET, September 30, 2008

Day 3 of the WSOP was the day when 1,308 players fought hard to stay in until the money. Watch out for the fortunes of Full Tilt Poker pros who started the day near the top, including Jeremiah Smith (6th), Brandon Adams (11th) and Nenad Medic (34th). Others who may surface include Adam Schoenfeld and Dag Martin Mikkelsen and the cameras never seem far away from Gus Hansen, Allen Cunningham or Mike Matusow.

Wrap-up of ESPN Poker Series 2008 – Episodes 19 & 20 (Day 2B) of WSOP Main Event #54, World Championship No-Limit Texas Hold ’em

Originally aired on ESPN, September 23rd, 2008

Full Tilt Poker pros were well represented in the coverage of Day 2B of the WSOP Event, as the field thinned considerably from 2,378 players to the 842 from this day who made it into Day 3.

Nenad Medic was the most successful of the day and can be seen coolly taking down a pot as he plays solitaire on his phone at the same time. Mike Matusow − whose self-proclaimed run of bad beats seemed to be improving − was featured heavily, as was Gus Hansen, who demonstrated good instincts in several lay downs. Jeff Madsen, Allen Cunningham and Jennifer Harman were others who ended the day heading to Day 3. Diego Cordovez and Howard Lederer were shown making their farewell from the tournament for this year.

Watch to see how WSOP gold bracelet winners fared, including Team Full Tilt’s Gus Hansen, Mike Matusow, and Howard Lederer.

Wrap-up of ESPN Poker Series 2008 – Episodes 17 & 18 (Day 2A) of WSOP Main Event, World Championship No-Limit Texas Hold ’em

Originally aired on ESPN, September 16th, 2008

Day 2A started with 1,251 hopefuls but it was the long standing pros who held the limelight in ESPN’s coverage.

The cameras followed Erick Lindgren'sand play but his short stack did not last the day, ending with an unspectacular losing hand to an opponent’s pair of sevens. Bill Gazes was more successful, seen calling the bluffs of other pros as he made it into Day 3 in 411th place. Patrik Antonius also had a difficult day protecting a dwindling stack. He managed to survive to Day 3, joined by his fiancé Maya who was in 125th place. Martin Klaser, one of the youngest bracelet winners in history, could not replicate his success from earlier in the Series and was knocked out by the day’s chip leader. Erik Seidel also made an appearance, being one of the few top pros who made it into Day 3. He finished in 197th place in a slightly better than average chip position. ESPN will air coverage of Day 2B next week − stay tuned to this page for a preview of the upcoming action.

Originally aired on ESPN, September 9th, 2008

Day 1-C and Day 1-D of the Main Event were featured in Episodes 15 & 16 on ESPN, with Mike Matusow and Phil Ivey very much in the center of the action.

The always entertaining Mike “The Mouth” Matusow dominated Episode 15 and had a steady first day, managing to eliminate several competitors in big plays and surviving the cut in 233rd place. David Singer (16th) and Nenad Medic (44th) finished the day in the top 50, with Jeff Madsen (229th), Clonie Gowen (775th) and John Juanda (911th) making it into Day 2 also.

In Episode 16, Phil Ivey was on ESPN’s featured table but ran into some trouble. Despite pulling off a serious bluff earlier in the day, he lost most of his chips when his nut flush was not good enough to win the hand and was eliminated shortly afterwards. David Oppenheim (13th), Gus Hansen (28th) and Nikolay Evdakov (42nd) finished the day in the top 50, with Jennifer Harman (165th), Phil Gordon (201st), Kelly Kim (208th), Chip Jett (262nd), Allen Cunningham (310th), Scott Clements (690th) and Howard Lederer (718th) making the cut at the end of the day.

Wrap-up of ESPN Poker Series 2008 – Episodes 13 (Day 1A) & 14 (Day 1B) of WSOP Main Event #54, World Championship No-Limit Texas Hold ’em

Originally aired on ESPN, September 2nd, 2008

The first episodes of the Main Event kicked off with action from Day 1A and Day 1B of the Main Event, and Full Tilt Poker’s Erick Lindgren and Bill Gazes were two of the heavy hitters on ESPN’s featured tables.

Erick Lindgren was the star of the show, having earned the title of 2008 WSOP Player of the Year and placing 3rd in the $50k H.O.R.S.E. event. He didn’t disappoint, with a series of bluffs on less experienced opponents. E-Dog finished the day in 19th place. Kenny Tran was not so lucky, as he busted out to a flush on the turn. Robert Mizrachi did considerably better, ending the day in 3rd place, with Markus Golser (30th) and Barny Boatman (34th) following in the top 50. Others who survived into Day 2 included Dave Colclough (71st), Erik Seidel (78th), Patrik Antonius (82nd), Greg Mueller (251st) and Bill Edler (273rd).

Having to cope with some erratic play from Main Event rookies, Bill Gazes was seen chasing and catching flushes as he made his way in 419th position into Day 2. Brandon Adams might not have gotten as much camera time, but he was most definitely on the leaderboard with a 2nd place finish of the 1,297 runners on Day 1A. Other Full Tilt Poker pros finished in the top 50, including Mark Vos (15th), Scott Montgomery (24th), Svetlana Gromenkova (28th) and Jeremiah Smith (33rd). Craig Marquis (71st), Michael Craig (184th), Thomas Wahlroos (459th) and Vitaly Lunkin (485th) were others who survived the cut.

Wrap-up of ESPN Poker Series 2008 – WSOP Event #45, World Championship HORSE

Originally aired on ESPN, August 19th, 2008

Poker on TV

Last night was all about Team Full Tilt’s Erick Lindgren and his quest to take down poker’s most prestigious title, along with his second bracelet of this year’s Series. Full Tilt Poker pro Huck Seed, 1996 Main Event winner, also made his way to the final table of the $50K World Championship HORSE event. Both players were looking to secure another bracelet and the nearly $2 million 1st place prize.

Huck Seed had a bumpy ride at the final table last night and was never really able to get things going and make a strong run at the title. His evening came to an end during a round of Stud Hi/Lo when his opponent made a flush and a qualifying low hand to scoop the pot. Seed finished in 7th place and took home almost $285K for his efforts.

Erick Lindgren was running strong much of the night, and put himself in a good position to make a run at the bracelet as three-handed play began. As with his win in Event #4, Lindgren dominated the Limit rounds of play, proving that he just might be the top Limit Hold ‘em player in the world. Unfortunately, the blinds caught up with E-Dog and he was eliminated during a round of Stud, when his pair of Eights could not improve versus his opponent’s pair of Nines. Lindgren finished the tournament in 3rd place, winning more than $780K in prize money. And although he was not able to win the most prestigious bracelet in all of poker, Lindgren did manage to secure the 2008 WSOP Player of the Year honors with his high finish in this event.

Preview of ESPN Poker Series 2008 – WSOP Event #45, World Championship HORSE

To be aired on ESPN at 8:00 PM, August 19th, 2008

The biggest and most recognized tournament in all of poker will always be the WSOP Main Event, but the most prestigious tournament is fast becoming the $50K World Championship HORSE event. With such a large buy in, only the best and brightest of the poker world can afford to play in this event − this is where we separate the men from the boys. 148 players bought in to the tournament, creating a prize pool of more than $7 million, including nearly $2 million for 1st place.

Look for Full Tilt Poker to be well represented tonight, as we had several players make a deep run. Keep an eye out for Team Full Tilt's Phil Ivey, Erick Lindgren and Andy Bloch, along with Full Tilt Poker pro Huck Seed. Bloch is known as one of the best HORSE players in the world, while Ivey and Lindgren – fresh off winning his very first WSOP bracelet in Event #4 – are simply all-around poker studs. Don't miss a moment of the action tonight as these players gun for the most prestigious bracelet in all of poker.

Wrap-up of ESPN Poker Series 2008 – WSOP Event #4, $5,000 Mixed Hold 'em

Originally aired on ESPN, August 5th, 2008

Poker on TV

It was another star-studded final table on ESPN last night, as Team Full Tilt's Howard Lederer and Erick Lindgren, along with Full Tilt Poker pro Roland de Wolfe, played at the final table of 2008 WSOP Event #4, a $5K Mixed Hold 'em tournament. Lederer was in search of his 3rd WSOP bracelet, while Lindgren and de Wolfe were each looking for their first. The pressure was squarely on E-Dog, as he looked to shed his long standing title of "best pro without a bracelet".

Since this was a Mixed Hold 'em tournament, play consisted of a round of Limit Hold 'em followed by a round of No-Limit Hold 'em. Howard "The Professor" Lederer was our first pro sent to the rail, as his pocket 4s were counterfeited on the river by his opponent's A-Q when the board double paired. Lederer finished in 6th place out of 322 players, winning nearly $75K for his tremendous effort.

Next to go was Roland de Wolfe, as his top pair was outdrawn on the river by his opponent's flush draw. “The Sheep” finished the tournament in 4th place, good for more than $117K in prize money. That elimination left Erick Lindgren as the sole representative of Full Tilt Poker at the table.

Fortunately, this was E-Dog's night to shine. He handled the pressure of needing that first WSOP bracelet like it was nothing, and used his expertise in the Limit Hold 'em rounds to a great advantage. He won the event by busting his heads-up opponent with a straight versus two pair. Erick Lindgren captured nearly $375K in prize money, his first bracelet, and shed the title "best pro without a bracelet".

Preview of ESPN Poker Series 2008 – WSOP Event #4, $5,000 Mixed Hold 'em

To be aired on ESPN at 8:00 PM, August 5th, 2008

ESPN will air shows 5 and 6 from this year's WSOP tonight, focusing on Event #4, the $5,000 Mixed Hold 'em tournament. Play will alternate between one round of Limit Hold' em, and one round of No-Limit Hold 'em. 332 players entered this tournament, all vying for a piece of the more than $1.5 million prize pool. First place awards nearly $375K, along with the coveted WSOP bracelet.

There are lots of big-name players to watch out for tonight, as many of Full Tilt Poker's finest made a deep run in the event. Look for Team Full Tilt's Howard Lederer, Erick Lindgren, Andy Bloch and Patrik Antonius, along with Full Tilt Poker pros such as Roland de Wolfe and Robert Williamson III. Can The Professor take these young guns to class and win his third bracelet? Or will it be the night that E-Dog, Bloch, or Antonius take home their first? Wrap-up of ESPN Poker Series 2008 - WSOP Event #2, $1,500 No-Limit Hold 'em

Originally aired on ESPN, July 29th, 2008

Poker on TV

Last night was all about Team Full Tilt’s Chris Ferguson, as he went for his 6th WSOP bracelet in Event #2, a $1,500 No-Limit Hold ‘em tournament. Ferguson came into the final table of the event in 6th place, holding just over 1.2 million in chips – more than enough ammunition for one of the game’s best tournament players.

The early action at the table featured Mike Ngo, decked out in Full Tilt Poker gear, going back and forth with a player whom he’d bluffed into folding pocket Aces. Ngo ended up finishing in 5th place, good for more than $268K.

But the real story was Chris Ferguson, as he attempted to add another chapter to his storied WSOP career. He battled his way down to the final three players and was poised to take down another bracelet when his chip stack took a big hit. Ferguson pushed his remaining chips into the pot pre-flop with K-10, but was called by another player holding A-10 and failed to improve his hand. Chris finished the tournament in 3rd place and won nearly $400K for his efforts.

Originally aired on ESPN, July 22nd, 2008

Poker on TV

The World Series of Poker started with a star-studded line-up for its first show of the 2008 season on ESPN. The final table of Event #1, the $10,000 Pot-Limit Hold 'em World Championship, featured some of the biggest names in poker today, including Team Full Tilt's Andy Bloch and Patrik Antonius, along with Full Tilt Poker pro Nenad Medic.

All three pros were on a quest to win the elusive first WSOP bracelet. Patrik Antonius, Team Full Tilt's newest member, had a terrific run in Event #1 and ended up finishing in 7th place, taking home more than $124K in prize money. His night ended after a tough confrontation with fellow Team Full Tilt member, Andy Bloch.

Heads-up play came down to Bloch versus Nenad Medic, with Medic having more than a 2-1 chip lead over Bloch. Medic made good use of his chip advantage, putting a lot of pressure on Bloch. The tournament ended when Bloch got all of his chips in on the flop holding an over-pair to Medic's flush draw, which came through for Nenad on the turn and sealed his victory.

Andy Bloch took home nearly $500K for his 2nd place finish, but the night belonged to Nenad Medic. He won almost $800K and his first WSOP bracelet in becoming the Pot-Limit Hold 'em champion.
